Raymond School District Recall Election: Voters Decide Amid Controversy

In Racine County, the Raymond School District is embroiled in a recall election, with voters heading to the polls today. The focus of the election revolves around two board members facing recall, with controversy engrossing the district for the past 6 months.

Allegations of discrimination and lack of transparency arose following the board’s September vote to issue a notice of contract non-renewal to then-Principal Jeff Peterson.  After being placed on administrative leave, Peterson filed a complaint alleging discrimination based on his sexual orientation. The school board chose not to renew Peterson’s contract on December 6, 2023, citing evidence of poor performance.

Board members Janell Wise and Gwen Keller were initially part of the recall.  Keller decided to resign and not run again.  Wise chose to stay and fight for a spot on the board.

On the ballot today is a special general election for the Raymond 14 School District, At-large seat.  In one contest, it’s incumbent Janell Wise and challenger Jennifer Hribar. The contest for the seat to replace Keller is between Dean Langenfeld and Michael Pauers.

The Raymond Village Hall will be open for voting through 8pm tonight.
