RACINE, Wis (WRJN) – Racine County officials have released findings from their review of an election night reporting error that occurred during the April 2, 2024 election. Their investigation revealed that while the final election results were accurate, an error in the digital reporting process led to inaccuracies in the initial results posted online.
The issue stemmed from an error in reporting from a single ward in the Village of Mt. Pleasant. After the polls closed on April 2nd, officials noticed some mistakes in the first set of results posted online. The printed results from the voting machines were correct, but there was an error when these results were transferred to the digital reports.
The Racine County Clerk’s office says the problem occurred at the county level after polls had closed, not at individual polling places. The physical vote tally tapes printed by voting machines were accurate, but discrepancies arose when transferring these results into digital reports.
To address the issue, county officials manually collected results from municipal clerks and entered them into Wisconsin Elections Commission software. A subsequent recount for a contested county board supervisor race confirmed the accuracy of the original vote tallies.
The Clerk’s Office reports that they’ve implemented additional internal controls and enhanced pre-election testing measures to prevent similar issues in future elections.
