The interview started out with a mutual post election season sigh of relief. Malouf then followed up talking with Senator Testin about his thoughts after his re-election. Testin thanked those who helped support his campaign. He also took a moment to thank his opponent Colin McNamara for throwing his hat in the race. Malouf appreciated Testin’s remarks to McNamara. He also encouraged more people to get involved in local politics.

Senate President Pro Tempore

Testin was recently appointed as Senate President Pro Tempore. Malouf asked him to elaborate on the personal and professional meaning of the position. Testin explained that the position is “back-up quarterback” to the Senate President. Which puts Testin in that Presiding chair in the absence of the Senate President. Malouf asked Testin about his goals for this governing year. Testin said he hopes to once again serve in the joint finance committee. Testin impressed the urgency of dealing with the state’s budget surplus. Which led to Testin’s comments regarding the partisan tensions within the Wisconsin Legislature and Governor’s Office. He hopes that post-election governing might work more effectively. Malouf then gave Testin an opportunity to address the Wisconsinites that did not vote for him. Not necessarily to ease their concerns, but to clear the air after a tense campaign year.

We’re All in this Together

Testin responded by recognizing that both parties are responsible for the harmful rhetoric used throughout their campaigns. He reminded voters, who might have been disappointed in the results of the elections, that the state and country are still moving forward. That all governing officials make the same oaths to the United States Constitution. That he personally plans to work with anyone willing to get jobs done for the benefit of every Wisconsinite. Malouf emphasized the troubling statements made by President-Elect Trump. Then restated the duty of all elected officials to govern for the benefit of the entire country, not just those with whom they are politically aligned.
