A very busy Friday and Saturday of High School sports throughout central Wisconsin as the winter sports season heats up.

Death, taxes and the Wausau West hockey team winning the Marathon Cup. The Warriors won the Marathon Cup for an amazing 18th straight season on Saturday defeating D.C. Everest 4-2 at Greenheck-Turner Community Ice Arena in a game heard on 98.9 WXCO.
It wasn’t easy winning the Cup this season for West, who survived Mosinee 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals on Thursday, and had to come from behind to beat the Evergreens on Saturday. After Hendrix Damrow gave the Warriors the lead early in the first period, D.C. Everest senior Thomas Passineau would score twice to give the Evergreens a 2-1 lead after one period. It would stay that way until midway through the second period when West exploded for three goals. Cooper DePuydt tied the game with a deflection and then Chase Crass and Owen Pergolski also lit the lamp to complete the scoring. Julian Scalcucci made 27 saves in net for West. In the consolation game, Mosinee beat East-Merrill United 8-1 as Elliot Yirkovsky scored two goals.
Saturday was a good day for the Yirkovsky family as Jayden Yirkovsky would record a hat trick earlier in the day to help the Central Wisconsin Storm to a 6-2 win over St. Croix Valley, also a game heard on 98.9 WXCO. Gabi Heuser would add two goals for the Storm, who improve to 5-1 on the season.
In boys’ basketball it was the first night of conference play in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Wausau West recorded the first upset of the league season by winning in Stevens Point 55-50 in a game heard on 98.9 WXCO. Bennett Matteson scored 16 points for West while Griffin Lange added 14 to help the Warriors beat SPASH for the first time since February 18, 2011, a span of 26 games.
Wausau East stays perfect on the season with wins on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday the Lumberjacks started their WVC schedule with a 66-49 win over Merrill. Jesse Napgezek scored 25 points while Charlie Cayley scored 18 and added 15 rebounds in the game. East would then add a 78-64 win over Little Chute at the Baird Shootout in Kaukauna on Saturday. Napgezek scored 22 while Jaydan Garrett had 18 and Cayley 11 points and 10 rebounds as East improved to 7-0 on the season.
The other Wisconsin Valley Conference boys’ opener on Friday had three-time defending league champion Marshfield beat D.C. Everest 59-31 at the Everest Fieldhouse. Landon Lee had 15 points with Joey Ketterer adding 13 and Brooks Hinson 11 for the Tigers. Everest got 7 points each from Sam Dassow and Luke Auner.
In Great Northern Conference boys’ basketball Mosinee on Friday won at Medford 68-57. Trent Gorski had 24 points with Brayden Reinke adding 19 and Carson Balgord 15 for Mosinee. Mosinee also played Saturday at the Baird Shootout in Kaukauna and fell to Freedom 80-61 to fall to 5-1 overall on the season.

There were five Marawood North/South crossover games on Friday night and Rib Lake edged Marathon 55-54. Cody Radtke had 15 points for the Raiders while True Thurs added 10.

In girls’ basketball on Friday in the WVC, Merrill earned their first league win of the season with a 57-41 win over Wausau East. Brenna Jirovec had 20 points Kaela Clerveaux added 19 for the Bluejays.
Conference favorite SPASH won at Wausau West 74-40 on Friday. Jada Seubert had 20 points for the Panthers while Ayla Christensen led the Warriors with 12 points. Also Friday Marshfield topped D.C. Everest 47-36.
In the GNC in girls’ hoops on Friday, Mosinee beat Medford 53-43 to improve to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Lakeland is now 3-0 in the conference after rolling past Antigo 85-14. Rhinelander is tied with Lakeland atop the GNC standings after beating Northland Pines 70-22.
Like on the boys side, there were a bunch of Marawood Conference crossover games on Friday between the South and North Divisions. Abbotsford edged Newman Catholic 48-45 in Wausau on Friday. Also Marathon improved to 5-1 overall with a 57-43 win over Rib Lake. Mylee Haehlke had 14 points while Emma Love added 11 for the Raiders.
