Democrats need new vision to woo working-class Americans

GREEN BAY, WI- (WGBW) – A local professor recently wrote an article in The Nation on Why Democrats are losing Americans Without a College Degree–and How to Win Them Back. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Dr. Jon Shelton is the chair of Democracy and Justice Studies. He said voters know the economy isn’t working. And Democrats must offer a transformative vision for the working-class.

“What’s happening is that Americans, especially those 10 million Americans that swing elections, are desperately voting for something to change,” said Shelton. “As Democrats we can do that, but we have to have the right vision. And we have to offer something that is going to improve the economic livelihoods of all Americans.”

Shelton said it won’t be a quick fix and will require time and collaboration.

“We need working Americans to see what it is that they deserve and that the party is fighting for those things and fighting with them,” Shelton said. “This isn’t a sales job. This is building something together, and we have to do this over a sustained amount of time.”

Shelton made his comments on a recent edition of Civic Media’s Rational Revolution with Mark Becker which airs Saturdays at 2 PM across the Civic Media radio network.
