Portage County, Wis. (WFHR, WIRI, WXCO) – You can have free water testing in Portage County. If you have your own well and would like to have your water tested, you can apply through the private residential well program. You would need to own the property in Portage County served by a private well. It is also available to people who rent or lease property and use a private well for your drinking water. You would just need written preapproval of the property owner.
The funds for this WATER Project come from the American Rescue Plan Act – State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (ARPA-SLFRF). Portage County set aside the funds in April 2022. These funds are available to improve access to and provide safe drinking water for Portage County residents and small businesses serving the County. It’s called Well Owner Assistance for Treatment and Economic Recovery Program or Portage County WATER Program. 2025 is the final year the funds are available. The program is first-come, first-serve.
You can register online here for free water testing in Portage County. If you don’t feel comfortable using the online registry, you may contact Tyler Kunze or Lindsay Benaszeski for alternative registration. After you are registered, you’ll be contacted with a date to pick up your water test kit. You’ll then receive a copy of your water test results in the mail. You can find more information on the WATER Program here.
