MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – The jet stream has shifted, sending spring storms right through the state one after another, here’s what’s headed our way next.

It’s March 20th… marking the beginning of the Spring Equinox. This means that the Earth is not tilted towards or away from the sun. So it gives us a day with equal amount of sunlight and daylight.

It’s the time of year when the jet stream shifts, allowing both warm and cold temperatures to mix. It’s the Earth’s tug-of-war to even out the temperatures, in a sense. This season is usually packed with breezy winds, roller coaster temps and mess of wintry mix events in the state.

Wednesday, showers and storms rolled through southern parts of the state, while the north was hit hard with heavy, wet snow.

Accumulations piled up to 11.3″ in Tomah, 10.0″ in Neillsville, Crivitz and Irving picked up 9.0″ and Hatley piled up 8.7″. Areas from La Crosse to the U.P. shoveled more than a half foot of snow.

Meanwhile, a tree was knocked down and landed on a garage near Milwaukee from the high winds.

We aren’t done, either… not in the least bit. The jet stream will keep sending more storm systems our way, through the end of March.

Typically snow is expected up north and rain down south. Of course this comes with the switch from rain to snow in central parts of the state and south as the systems leave and drag colder air in.

The re-freezing of wet surfaces will keep happening overnight and into the early mornings as well. Because temperatures still cool down mostly below freezing.

Which is the exact same reason why it’s pothole season. When rain gets into the roads cracks, it freezes overnight, and expands. Thus breaking the pavement even further, as vehicles drive over it and rip it apart.

The next storm is tracking towards Wisconsin for late Saturday night, into Sunday and lingers Monday as well.
