Adding up the numbers in Milwaukee includes extra security, packed hotels, and extended bar hours during the convention’s four days
A surge in activity is underway in Milwaukee, but some of the up-tick is happening behind the scenes at the Republican National Convention, including three critical aspects you may not be able to see during it.
4,500 additional security officers: The RNC is designated a National Special Security Event after the Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security flagged it as a potential target for terrorism or other criminal activities. This designation makes the US Secret Service the lead agency for planning, coordinating, and implementing all security operations. It works in partnership with event stakeholders including federal, state, and local law enforcement, public safety agencies, as well as municipal, venue, and host representatives. It includes a federal grant of $50 million to cover security costs.
The Secret Service coordinator also saying despite the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, there are few changes to the plans developed during the last 18 months.
We are fully prepared and have a comprehensive security plan in place.
Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, RNC Coordinator for the US Secret Service
300 hotels across 60 miles: The demand for lodging this week is six times the annual average. Milwaukee is one of the smallest cities to host a major political convention and there are just under 4,000 rooms listed within a half-mile radius of the main RNC site. City officials helped coordinate with hundreds of additional hotels from Madison to Racine to secure enough rooms. Some convention attendees also booked private homes put up for short-term rent, along with area universities opening dormitories for guests during the week.
Hotel room prices are also up across southeast Wisconsin. Data from the website Hotel Dive shows average prices at $349 a night through July 19, the night after the event concludes.
14 counties with 4 am bar time: The State Assembly approved a special provision to allow bars and restaurants to stay open until 4 am during the convention. It is up to each business owner, but there are dozens extending hours in anticipation of late night festivities. Planning has included adding an extra shift of workers, and in many cases, doubling food, liquor and beer orders in preparation. Wisconsin law typically requires bars to close at 2 am on weekdays.
These behind-the-scenes numbers at the RNC in Milwaukee support the city’s efforts to show it is ready for the challenges and excitement of hosting a major event.
