MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – The University of Wisconsin-Madison reached $1.52 billion in research expenditure in the year 2022, according to the National Science Foundation.

This is the first time UW has gone over $1.5 billion and marks a 10% increase from last year, according to a release from the University.

About half of the money comes from federal awards, while the rest comes from state and local governments, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and UW Foundation.

Over 900 public and private universities are ranked, with UW finishing 8th in the country. Some of the areas UW saw an increase in funding were from federal dollars (up 14.5%) and industry sponsorship (28%).

UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin said that the ranking shows that researchers are “taking on society’s greatest challenges in their work.”

The release notes that the new School of Computer, Data and Information Sciences will open in 2025, and that the university is continuing to push the state legislature for funding for a new College of Engineering building.

You can read more about the ranking and more details about UW’s research on the university’s website.
