Racine, Wis (WRJN) – The City of Racine has officially acquired the former YMCA building at 725 Lake Ave., a move that signifies a significant step in the city’s endeavors to rejuvenate the downtown and combat blight in the area. The building, which has been dormant since its closure in 2019, is set to undergo a transformation under the city’s ownership.

Situated on valuable real estate with views of Lake Michigan, the property has been vacant and on the market for four years, attracting vandalism and criminal activities that prompted dozens of police service calls last year. Various proposals have been discussed for the site’s future use, ranging from family-oriented facilities to market-rate apartments or commercial establishments. Despite past developer interest in redeveloping the property, previous agreements have faltered, leaving uncertainty surrounding its future.

In response to safety concerns raised due to the deteriorating state of the building, the City of Racine says in a statement, they are prioritizing public safety and community welfare by initiating the demolition process as the initial phase of its redevelopment plan.

Mayor Cory Mason emphasized the city’s dedication to addressing this long standing issue, stating,”The acquisition of the former YMCA building presents a unique opportunity for the City of Racine to reclaim a vital piece of our community. Our foremost concern is the safety and well-being of our residents, and the decision to demolish the building aligns with our commitment to ensuring a safe environment for everyone.”

The city says demolition will adhere to all necessary safety protocols and regulations to mitigate any potential hazards posed by the deteriorating structure. Following this phase, the city will explore redevelopment options for the site, focusing on enhancing community life and fostering economic growth.

Community members are being told to stay engaged in the process, with opportunities for public input and feedback expected to be announced in the near future. Despite a previous developer contract expiring, the city proceeded with acquiring the property in September, while the primary YMCA location remains at 8501 Campus Drive in Mount Pleasant.
