Racine, Wis (WRJN) – The American Legion Post 310 is calling on the community for help in rehabbing the iconic “Boys of ’76” parade float, which dates back to 1920 and is believed to be the oldest veterans float in the country. The float, known for its historical significance, is in dire need of major restoration due to its age.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched with a goal of raising $3,000 to cover the restoration costs. As of now, the campaign has already raised almost $1,500. The float, which features a living tribute, has captured the hearts of many in the community, who are eager to preserve this piece of Racine’s history.
The “Spirit of ’76” part of the float pays homage to the famous painting of the same name. It commemorates the 100th anniversary celebration of the United States declaring independence and celebrates the American Revolution. On the other side, the “Boys of ’76” was built to honor the sacrifice of World War I veterans.
The 4th Fest of Greater Racine’s 4th of July parade, ranked one of the top ten in the country by USA Today, is known for its salute to veterans, with numerous “Living Memorial Floats” that pay tribute to the brave men and women who served our nation.
