RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) — A late-night fire in a four-family apartment building in Racine caused an estimated $230,000 in damage but resulted in no injuries, fire officials said Friday.

The Racine Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 2530 Northwestern Avenue just after midnight. A statement says the fire was brought under control in less than 20 minutes.

Fire crews rescued three cats, reuniting them with their owners. The American Red Cross is helping those displaced, we’re working to find out how many are without homes.

While the fire’s cause remains under investigation, officials do not suspect foul play. People living there were alerted by smoke alarms, prompting fire officials to remind citizens of their importance.

“Working smoke alarms save lives,” said a fire department spokesperson. “We encourage residents to check their alarms monthly.”

The fire department offers free smoke alarm installation to Racine residents. For fire safety questions, contact the Racine Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau at 262-635-7915.
