Election Season Begins: Racine City Council and Kenosha School Board Candidates Announced

RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) — Ballots are set for the next elections in Racine and Kenosha. The filing deadline has passed and there will be options in some races.

Ten Racine City Council seats are contested. Two districts will have primaries on February 18. The 5th District has incumbent Melissa Kaprelian on the ballot along with Jens Jorgensen and Raymond Ellison, Jr. Terry McCarthy is stepping down in the 9th District. There, four candidates will compete: Patrick Schwanke, Grace Allen, Eric Hillery, and Colin McKenna.

Five incumbents—Maurice Horton, Olivia Davis, Cinthia Esqueda, Renee Kelly, and Marlo Harmon—will run unopposed.

Other races without primaries include incumbent 1st District Alderman Jeff Coe facing Malik Frazier, the 11th contest between Mary Land and Michael Hansen, and in the 15th, with incumbent Cory Sebastian facing Nathan Pabon.

In Kenosha, a primary will be held for two seats on the Kenosha Unified School Board. Five candidates have filed, including one incumbent, Rebecca Stevens. The other incumbent, Kristine Schmaling, is not seeking reelection. Those looking to get on the board include Carl Bryan, Andreas Mamalakis, Sheb Muhammad, and Valerie Kretchmer.

The general election is scheduled for April 1.
