RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) — Even though the buildings will be different, the Red Apple name will remain in place. The Racine Unified School District Board voted 6-1 this week to keep the name Red Apple School after discussions about a name change were taking place.
The K-8 school, currently located at 914 St. Patrick St., will relocate to 1012 Center St. in 2026. The new facility will accommodate up to 800 students and continue its focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math education.
The decision follows a 3-1 vote by the board’s Facility Renaming Committee on Jan. 13 against changing the name to honor Dr. Laurel Clark, a NASA astronaut and Racine native who died in the 2003 Columbia space shuttle disaster.
Red Apple, founded in 1974, was awarded a National Blue Ribbon in 2020 for closing achievement gaps.
