RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) — Fire and ice came to a Racine neighborhood last night. Firefighters were called to a basement fire in the 1100 block of Monroe Avenue, with everyone inside, including the pets, able to get out safely.
The Racine Fire Department was called to the home at 8:17 p.m. after reports of heavy smoke coming from the basement.
A statement says the first unit got to the scene two minutes after the initial call, with smoke found coming from a basement window.
The home sustained significant fire and smoke damage to a basement workshop area and light smoke damage to the rest of the basement and first floor.
Due to the temperatures, the water used started to ice over the road, with City of Racine crews called in to put down some salt.
No injuries were reported among people living in the home or fire personnel.
The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical or mechanical issue in the workshop area, though it remains under investigation.
