MADISON, Wis. (WRJN) – Four Wisconsin broadcasters have been named 2024 WBA Local Broadcast Legends, including a beloved Racine radio personality who left a major mark on the community.

Gary Suhr, who passed away in 2020, was the voice of Racine for over three decades at WRJN radio. From 1962 to 1998, Suhr brought local sports to life, broadcasting more than 2,100 games including high school football, basketball, and Racine Raiders semi-pro football.

Suhr’s dedication to his craft earned him numerous accolades. The press box at Horlick Athletic Field bears his name, and he was inducted into both the Racine Raiders Hall of Fame and the American Football Hall of Fame. In 2017, the Racine County Sports Hall of Fame honored him with the “Deep Roots” Award.

Beyond sports, Suhr was a committed journalist covering local news and hosting educational programs. His contributions to the community extended well past his retirement, as he continued to mentor and volunteer in various capacities.

The WBA Local Broadcast Legends Award, established in 2015, recognizes individuals who exemplify localism and commitment to their communities.

This year’s honorees will be celebrated at the WBA Summer Conference on June 19, 2025, in La Crosse.
