Moore has long been a beloved figure in the Madison area. He’s not only known for his skill on the court but for his character off of it. And his role in helping to shape the UW Madison men’s basketball program has been pivotal in turning it into a powerhouse. In 1994, he teamed up with future stars like Michael Finley and Tracy Webster to get the Badgers back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1947. But after so much success, his life took a tragic turn when he, his wife, and their children were involved in a car crash in Michigan caused by a drunk driver.
Roach explores the ripple effects surrounding what happened that night. He shines the light on Moore’s life as an athlete and a father. And through multiple interviews, Roach is able to uncover the many ways Moore’s community rallied around him following the crash. The film also highlights moments of unwavering support, including from former teammate and friend Michael Finley, who personally contributed a hyperbaric chamber to aid in Moore’s recovery.
This is a deeply personal documentary and addresses Moore’s devastating losses of his wife and daughter. But A Road at Night ultimately celebrates the strength, love, and resilience of his family and friends. Moore’s journey becomes one of triumph while facing unimaginable hardship. The powerful message about the importance of community and the human spirit is inspiring.
A Road at Night premieres at The Barrymore Theatre in Madison on Sunday, April 6 at 7 pm. And as part of the Wisconsin Film Festival, Roach will be there to share his tribute to Moore and his legacy.
