Microsoft can now move ahead with plans for 15 new data centers in Mount Pleasant after the village board gave its initial approval last night. The $13 billion development will sit partly on land once set aside for Foxconn and partly on land recently purchased by the tech giant.

Most people at the meeting supported the project, though some questioned how long the jobs will last. Village President David DeGroot pushed back on those concerns, saying construction could keep crews busy for up to a decade as the operation is built. Once up and running, the full development is expected to be valued at more than $13 billion.
