Altoona City Council Approves Funding for The Yard

The City of Altoona has approved funding for a number of improvements and maintenance projects at The Yard Container Park.

The container park on Division Street officially opened last summer, using old shipping containers as retail spaces for local businesses. The site also includes a stage area for live music and some green space.

The roughly three year project faced a number of regulatory hurdles during its development, but has quickly become a popular local destination for residents to spend their time during the warmer months. It also serves as a great opportunity for local entrepreneurs to grow their new businesses and establish a strong customer base before moving their operations into a more permanent location in the region.

The Altoona City Council approved allocating a total of $75,000 for the improvements. $18,000 of that funding will go towards replacing the tile flooring in three restaurant units. Another $12,000 will be used for sidewalk and tent pad installation and $7,000 will go towards a storage shed and pad for materials and equipment. $6,000 will be used to replace the roof on the tap room, another $6,000 will be used to purchase a small outdoor projector, screen and cover licensing fees, and $5,500 will be used to purchase a multi-purpose event tent.

City of Altoona officials say the goal of the improvements is to continue building on the success of The Yard by addressing maintenance needs and finding new ways to use the site. They’re hoping it will serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the downtown area.
