Racine is remembering Bob Uecker. The Milwaukee Brewers announced his passing this morning at the age of 90. The last time his voice was heard on WRJN was in October, when the Brewers lost to the Mets in a Wild-Card Game.
For years, it wasn’t out of the ordinary to see Mr. Baseball at Skipper Buds in Racine, where his love for boating and fishing led him to give back through his passion. For 17 years, the broadcasting and entertainment legend helped out kids everywhere with the Bob Uecker Great Lakes Invitational. The event was based out of Reefpoint Marina and raised thousands of dollars through the years.
The connection goes a little deeper. Uecker was first signed to play for the Milwaukee Braves in 1956. News of that signing was likely broadcasted on WRJN, as we were an affiliate at the time. Proof is on display in the Radio Park basement, with this classic billboard proudly on the wall.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Uecker family. For more about his passing, there’s a news story on our website.
